In 2008, MONDRAGON provided 3.6 % of the Basque Autonomous Community’s total GDP and 6.6% of its Industrial GDP

Photo Industrie is very important in GDPOn the basis of the Eustat data for the Basque economy as a whole in 2008, the value added by the MONDRAGON Corporation to the Basque Autonomous Community’s total Gross Domestic Product during the financial year was 3.6%, and 6.6% in the industrial area.

This data shows that for every 28 euros of wealth generated in the Basque Autonomous Community as a whole in 2008, 1 euro came from the business conducted by MONDRAGON, with this proportion increasing to 15 –to-1 if the comparison is limited to the industrial sector.

Another noteworthy fact is that of the 2,515 million euros of Added Value generated by MONDRAGON in the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarra, 1,514 million were assigned to Personnel Expenses, directly benefiting the domestic economies of the members and workers of the cooperatives and associated companies and with a positive effect on consumption and savings in both Autonomous Communities.

As regards employment, MONDRAGON also created 3.6% of the total jobs in the Basque Autonomous Community in 2008. It was the leading private sector employer in Gipuzkoa province, with 20,221 direct jobs, also ranking first in Bizkaia with 12,660 jobs and taking third place in Álava with 2,748. In Navarra, Corporation-linked business gave rise to 4,412 jobs, making the Corporation the Autonomous Community’s second largest employer.

In addition to direct employment, in 2008 the Corporation’s business also generated induced employment in the Basque Autonomous Community for an estimated 19,600 jobs, related to the demand from the Corporation’s companies for the goods and services of local supplier firms.

As regards industrial investment, as indicated by the latest edition of Eustat’s Industrial Survey for the financial year 2007, the 331 million euros invested by the Corporation’s industrial area in that year represented 12.7% of the total industrial investment made in the Basque Autonomous Community. In Gipuzkoa, this percentage constituted more than 30% of the total industrial investment made in the territory in 2007.
