Fagor opens an unvented-cylinder plant in Basauri

  • Date: Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Last Monday Fagor held the opening ceremony for its new unvented hot water cylinder plant in Basauri, in the province of Bizkaia.

The main activity of the plant will focus on the production of 150-300 litre floor-standing, single and dual coil, jacket, unvented hot water cylinders; 50-150 litre, wall-hung, unvented hot water cylinders; and large volume electric water heaters from 200 to 300 litres.

This new project, part of the “Strategic Comfort Plan for the period 2009-2012”, is aimed at meeting the targets set by the EU to increase the percentage of total energy consumption that renewable energy accounts for by 20%.

According to the company’s forecasts, the production rate will be 40 units an hour, with the manufacturing process integrated in a line. The installed production capacity will be 150,000 hot water cylinders a year.

The unvented hot water cylinder is a clear example of how advantage can be taken of solar power in the home, as its function is to accumulate hot water for domestic use. To do this it needs to be connected to an external heat source, such as a solar panel, for example.

According to Txema Gisasola, the Managing Director of Fagor Electrodomésticos, ‘the new plant in Basauri is the result of our latest investment effort with a total of 6.3 million euros earmarked for this project, which will enable us to maintain our indisputable leadership in the electric water heater market. Thanks to this new plant, we will generate around 50 new jobs by 2012 and 20 more jobs the following year’.

The Fagor Electrodomésticos Group is the fifth largest European domestic appliance manufacturer with an 18.2% market share in Spain and a turnover of 1.4bn euros in 2009. In terms of sales, it operates in 130 countries worldwide, with 12 different brands. Innovation, internationalisation and sustainability are the three central points in the company’s strategic plan. The company is part of the Mondragon Corporation, the seventh biggest business group in Spain and the biggest co-operative group in the world.
