Prizes awarded for the fourth “MAIER International Design Competition”
The prize-giving ceremony took place on July 1 at the “Automotive Intelligence Center” in Zornotza (Bizkaia) and was attended by figures including the director of Economic Promotion of the Bizkaia Provincial Government, Imanol Pradales, the Vice-President of the MONDRAGON Automotive Division, José Ramón Goikoetxea, and the President of the Basque Association of Industrial Designers (EIDE), Ignacio Sola.
The 8,000 euro first prize went to the project “Leisure Microdot”, developed by José Ignacio Aguirre, Manuel Álvarez, Javier Machimbarrena and Alex Ochoa de Aspuru, all designers from the international company Mandesso Design. The second prize, 4,000 euros was awarded to the project “Travelling is Discovering” by Iraia Sanz, Johanna Starkl and Sila Pascual, students at the La Rioja University College of Design. The third prize consisted of 3,000 euros and was awarded to “Wicker&Crochet”, entered by Paula Canalejo, Miriam Carcía, Marta Gómez and Claudia Gómez, also students at the La Rioja University College of Design.
The competition, which was held for the fourth time, received a total of 99 projects from countries including France, Holland, Spain, Russia, India, Brazil and the USA, reflecting the great interest taken in this contest organised by the MAIER Group.
Color & Trim
All the projects taking part this year were linked to the Color & Trim field, a widely extended concept in the automotive area involving the design of colours, materials and texture for vehicle decor. The entries focused on four aspects to be enhanced through Color & Trim: excitement (creating new emotions during vehicle travel), multisensorial (as touch, sight, smell, etc. take on great importance in the design of finishes), mobility (enjoying the journey in a comfortable, pleasant space) and responsibility (through the use of environment-friendly materials).
The evaluation criteria used by the Jury, which consisted of representatives from Design Centres, Automotive Companies and Public Institutions and Automotive Sector Designers, were Innovation in the design proposals, quality of the deliverables and applicability to the automotive sector.
The object of the competition is to encourage and promote Innovation in the Maier Group in order to offer added value and a competitive differential to customers through design. Its aims are eminently practical, as it is not merely appearance-orientated but also applicable to the production field, either by Maier itself or by other vehicle manufacturers the firm habitually works with.
