Maier sets up a joint venture in India

  • Date: Saturday, December 17, 2011

MTCThe Bizkaia-based co-operative Maier, part of the MONDRAGON Corporation, has recently expanded its international presence in India by signing a joint venture with a local partner, the UM Group.

The new company created as a result of this partnership, Alpha Maier Pvt. Ltd., will supply decorated plastic units and parts for the automotive sector. Alpha Maier aims to consolidate itself as a benchmark supplier in the Indian market, which is expected to experience high rates of growth over the next few years.

The company plans to invest more than €5m and already has projects to start supplying Maruti Suzuki, the leading car manufacturer in India, as well as other clients (General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Peugeot-Citroen) which Maier already has close commercial links with in Europe.

As far as 2012 is concerned, it is worth highlighting that Alpha Maier is forecasting a turnover of around €4m, and to end the year with a workforce of close to 90 people.

The UM Group is a highly diversified Indian corporation, which includes activities aimed at sectors such as energy, automotive and equipment for electricity distribution. Maier has agreed this partnership with this corporation’s automotive division, which produces rear-view mirrors, claxons and instrument panels with printed circuits.

The MAIER Group, based in Ajangiz (Bizkaia) and part of MONDRAGON, currently operates five production plants: the head offices in Ajangiz; Maier Navarra, in the Ultzama valley; Maier Ferroplast, in Porriño (Pontevedra), close to Vigo; Maier UK, in the United Kingdom; and Maier Czechia. The forecasts in 2011 are for a turnover of €210m, of which close to 70% is from international sales. The total workforce accounts for 1,700 people. This new international set-up in India can now be added to these plants. The Group also has the MTC (Maier Technology Center), specialising in plastic technologies for the automotive sector, as well as the development of decorations linked to these.

The MAIER Group, well established in the automotive plastic components sector, is a business group whose key, differentiating factors are decoration (painting and chrome plating, as well as laser and pad printing, among other technologies) and the mastery of highly complex parts in functional terms.

Maier manufactures a wide range of interior and exterior car parts: front grilles, air inlet grilles, handles, wheel covers, dashboard fascias, trims and lateral mouldings, among others.
