Eroski continues its rate of growth in supermarkets in 2007, with the opening of 50 new stores

  • Date: Thursday, December 27, 2007

These new stores reinforce the Eroski Group’s strategy for this type of neighbourhood format, taking the total number of supermarkets of its own and franchise outlets to 1,642, which currently makes it the biggest chain of supermarkets in Spain.

This chain has grown with the opening of fifty new stores, mainly in Andalucía, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, the Valencia region, Galicia, Madrid, the Basque Country, Murcia and Navarra. The new workforce taken on for these new supermarkets is close to one thousand people.

Eroski currently has a workforce of48,000 people and has a plan of action for the next few years to extend worker participation in the ownership, results and management of the company to all its workers. At the moment, the number of worker-owners is 14,000.

The Eroski/center and Caprabo supermarkets offer a wide range of fresh produce, with a great variety of items and brands, at a very competitive price, with the Eroski brand playing a leading role in this activity.

Eroski estimates that this year it will invest more than 500 million euros, which is the annual average for the last five years. This figure will enable all the Group’s strategic commercial formats to be developed, those in which food plays the leading role with hypermarkets and supermarkets, as well as those focusing on diversification amongst which the perfume, stores travel agencies, petrol stations and sports goods stores stand out.

Eroski’s chain of stores today consists of 113 Eroski hypermarkets, 1,042 Eroski/center, Caprabo and Eroski/city supermarkets, 266 Eroski/viajes branches, 52 petrol stations, 42 Forum Sport stores, 295 If perfume stores, 4 Abac leisure and culture stores and 26 goods depots. In addition to this, there are also 584 self-service franchise outlets. Eroski also operates 4 hypermarkets, 16 supermarkets and 17 petrol stations in France.
