José Mª Aldecoa, the new President of the MCC’s General Council, suggests that reinforcing Co-operative Values will be his main objective

  • Date: Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Before a large number of media representatives from television, radio and the newspapers, the new President began by going over the figures for the first half of the year, in which sales increased by 11%, better than the 8% forecast, and in which profits also did better than forecast, with a 20% rise.

He stressed that the MCC was performing well economically and in business terms, and if nothing unexpected occurs, the expectations for the year will be met. In this regard, he pointed out that his contribution is not going to have much effect in the short term, as the path to be followed has already been well laid, but more in the medium and long term, where there are a lot more unknown quantities.

He went on to say that in this context “the most important and difficult challenge that he is going to focus on is how to ensure that in 2020 the MCC Co-operatives continue to be what they are today, growing and creating jobs on a co-operative basis”.

He completed this idea by saying that those in charge of the Co-operatives’ businesses will deal with those businesses and that as President he will focus mainly on fomenting Co-operative Values –in line with what has been expressed in the last two years by those who have been involved in the strategic reflection on the Sense of the Experience-, and on promoting the new Management Model which, based on the Basic Co-operative Principles, gives People in Co-operation a real leading role in management, helping to develop an Excellent Company, with results not just in economic but also in social and business terms”.

Innovation, internationalisation, development and the Corporation’s other strategies will continue to be objectives of the President, but within the framework of the new management model. Aldecoa stressed that the MCC’s co-operatives main competitive advantage does not have to come from the application of outside tools “but from the development of what is inherent to us, our Co-operative Values”. “What is more difficult for others to copy –he added- is our co-operative model, which gives People the leading role and makes them agents for change”. It is therefore going to be very important to intensify training work, especially on the co-operative side.

Finally, in answer to questions from the journalists about extending the participative business culture to non-co-operative workers in the MCC, Aldecoa promised that within five years, 90% of the companies in the Corporation, both in Spain and abroad, would have the mechanisms necessary for participation, adapted to each different country and environment”.
