Fagor Industrial opens its production subsidiary in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and wins the Prize for Internationalisation

  • Date: Friday, March 16, 2007

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Governor of the State of San Luis Potosí, Manuel de los Santos Fraga; by the Basque Government’s Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Ana Agirre; and by the Chief Executive of Fagor Industrial and Vice-president of the MCC, José Luis Lizarbe.

Fagor Industrial Mexico is located on the Tres Naciones Industrial Estate, the most select in San Luis Potosí. The company’s buildings occupy 8.100 m2, with 6,300 m2 of industrial plant and 1,800 m2 of offices and services. There is up to 46,800 m2 of land available for expansion. The initial investment has accounted for 6 million dollars and during its first incomplete year, 2006, the company posted a turnover of 8.5 million dollars, and the forecast for 2007 is 15 million dollars, with a workforce of 94 people.

Fagor Industrial’s presence in San Luis Potosí is part of the company’s strategy to set up its own plants in the main economic areas of the world: Europe, Mexico-United States and China and perhaps at a later date India and Russia. Its location in San Luis Potosí is for strategic reasons, as it is equidistant from the ports of Manzanillo and Tampico and in the centre of a triangle formed by Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico, where 80% of Mexico’s GDP is concentrated. The San Luis plant manufactures commercial refrigeration appliances, which it supplies to customers in Mexico, United States and Central and South America.

Fagor Industrial is today the leader in its sector in Spain. It also occupies a competitive position in the European market, where it has a reputation for quality and good service, with an extensive sales and production network. It has commercial subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Turkey and production plants in France, Italy, Poland and Turkey, in addition to the four it has in Spain. Likewise, outside Europe, it has commercial subsidiaries in Colombia, Chile, Australia, Dubai, China and the United States, with production plants in China and Mexico.

The accelerated process of expansion that Fagor Industrial has undergone over the last few years would not have been possible without the firm support of a culture based on quality and innovation. This culture is the result of a Technical R&D Centre with a team of 38 professionals, a budget totalling 5.5 million euros in 2006 and an investment of 4.1 million. This commitment to innovation has led to the company registering 17 patents of its own, thereby achieving a significant competitive position.

In 2006, the Fagor Industrial Group’s total turnover totalled 164.5 million euros, which was a 21% increase compared to 2005, of which 80 million (49%) came from sales abroad. The Group’s total workforce accounted for 1,230 people in 2006, of which 500 were working in the Group’s headquarters in Oñati.
